1) Jay Asher – 13 Reasons Why
Eh. Kamarád mi doporučil tuhle knížku, že je fakt dobrá. Četla se dobře a zůstala jsem kvůli ní vzhůru asi do dvou do rána, ale bohužel měla pro mě dost problematický obsah. Celý ten koncept mi přišel zvrácený. Autor jím v podstatě vytváří romantickou představu o sebevraždě. Holka se před sebevraždou nahraje na kazety a rozešle je 13 lidem, kteří za to údajně můžou. Takže potenciálně zničí život 13 dalším lidem a nebylo by divu, kdyby to vedlo k dalším sebevraždám. Prý už se tím někdo inspiroval ve skutečnosti... Napsané to nebylo špatně, ale bohužel mě to příliš znechutilo.

2) Jan Procházka – Ucho
Vzala jsem si k rodičům na víkend bláhově jen jednu knížku (tu předchozí), tak jsem pak sáhla do starých nepřestěhovaných zásob a narazila na Ucho. V centru pozornosti je manželský páreček – muž dost vysoko v hierarchii KSČ v 50. letech a jeho žena, která ho doprovází na komunistické párty. Ucho je odposlouchávací zařízení, které mají doma instalované snad ve všech místnostech. Po jedné párty se většinu noci hádají, bojí se, že půjdou kvůli něčemu do vězení a mají nečekanou noční návštěvu. Měla jsem to rychle přečtené a připomnělo mi to trochu Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf od Edwarda Albeeho.

4) Mark Twain – The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

I skipped this book in college and it remained on my TBR for years, because I really wanted to accomplish reading it, since it is such a classic. Well, I finally did it. And I was suffering for the majority of the book, it took me (what seemed like) forever to read AND it sent me into a mini reading slump, hence the 2 stars.
Firstly, it was quite difficult for me as a non-native speaker of English to understand the dialects, but I got used to it to some extent. Unfortunately, the story wasn't very compelling either. It got a bit better in the second part – especially the inheritance story was almost interesting - but then it got worse again when Tom Sawyer appeared. I mean the final chapters were just annoying and obnoxious because Huck was being manipulated to do stupid stuff he didn't want to do.
I understand it is considered a great American novel because of the friendship between Huck and Jim etc., but from the point of my reading experience, it was sweet and touching and funny at times, but mostly I was bored and struggling. I'm glad I've finally read it, though. :- )

5) Jaroslav Kalfař – Kosmonaut z Čech

Jaroslav Kalfař said in an interview that in this book, he wanted to express his affection for the Czech Republic, his homeland, and he did a good job at that. Spaceman of Bohemia was first published in the United States and then translated into Czech and it is full of Czech historical/cultural hints and sensory descriptions of Prague and a village, where the main protagonist spent a part of his childhood.
Jakub Procházka becomes an orphan at a young age and is raised by his grandparents. His father was an informer for the Communist Party and did nasty things to politically unsuitable people. After his death, his family suffers when the victims of the regime seek revenge.
When Jakub grows up, he is chosen to go into space, which can help him atone for his father's deeds, bring glory to his country and not be "a nobody". But when alone in space, his marriage is at risk and both the past and the future strike back through an alien spider/a hallucination.
The first part taking place in space with flashbacks to heartbreaking memories was amazing. I have read a lot of books about the Communist era in my country, but they were usually told from the perspective of the victims, so reading about a child of an informer was interesting. As an adult, Jakub is sarcastically funny and the conversations with his (un)real companion in space are charming. The second part is rather raw and maybe more cynical and reveals the fate of the mission as well as if and how people involved can go on with their lives after such experience.
Spaceman in Bohemia includes an adventure in space but primarily encompasses melancholic and ironic thoughts about making peace with the past, about the outlook for the future and about the meaning and purpose of it all, from the perspective of an individual and a nation. It is very well written and I would recommend it to everyone who might be interested in a little contemplating in space. :- )

6) Colleen Hoover – Ugly Love
Asi poprvé jsem četla nějakou new-adult knížku, ha. Střídaly se tam dva pohledy – pohled Tate, která pracuje v nemocnici a dodělává si u toho školu. Potká Milese, který je podivně emociálně uzavřený a za boha jí o sobě nechce prozradit nic osobního. Jiskří to mezi nimi jako blázen a Miles jí řekne, že jí může nabídnout pouze sex. S čímž Tate souhlasí, i když si vůbec není jistá, jestli to ustojí. To byl trochu otravný aspekt toho příběhu, že už od začátku čekala, že bude něco víc, i když s ní jednal na rovinu. Druhá linie vyprávění je z pohledu Milese, ve které se postupně dozvídáme, co se mu stalo, že už nechce za žádnou cenu do vztahu.
No, nebylo to tak špatný, jak to možná zní, celkem jsem si to užila, i když to nebylo zrovna veselý čtení.

7) Gillian Flynn – Gone Girl
Tuhle knížku jsem si chtěla přečíst už delší dobu a měla jsem ohledně ní velká očekávání, která byla splněna z pohledu kvality, ale ne z pohledu čtenářského zážitku. A ten konec! Grh. Recenze z Goodreads:

2017/10/09 ... So. This book is great. It is so well written. The plot is brilliant. But I just didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would.
In both parts of the book, the point of view alternates between Nick and Amy. In the first part, we follow Nick in the present, after his wife went missing on their fifth wedding anniversary. He ends up being the main suspect, which is supported by Amy's point of view: her diary entries starting at the time they met and telling the story of the development of their relationship. But I believe Nick didn't kill her. Then the second part comes and all hell breaks loose.
The main characters were really unlikeable for me. Their relationship was crappy and based on shaky grounds, and they made it worse by not communicating, having unrealistic expectations and just behaving in a really annoying way. And it would have been fine and in line with the story, but then it ended the way it ended, which was very WTF. I didn't like the ending. At all. Also, it took me some time to get invested in the story in the first place.
Despite all the issues, Gone Girl deserves 4 stars, because have I mentioned that the writing was very good and the plot well constructed? It had its undeniable charm.

Gone Girl jsem dočetla pár hodin před půlnocí poslední zářijový den, z čehož mělo moje organizační já velkou radost. :- D Co vy, četli jste něco z těchto knížek? A co zářijové čtenářské zážitky?
